The Small Habits Every Successful Home-Based Groomer Swears By

July 29, 20266 min read

When we look at successful home-based dog groomers, it's easy to think they've discovered some secret formula. Something that they have but you don't. Something that they are gate keeping so that they can be super successful while you feel like you are just trying to keep your head above water.

Maybe they're naturally good with dogs.
Maybe they're lucky.
Maybe they have more money, more experience, or somehow know all the right people.

But in reality?

Most successful groomers aren't doing anything extraordinary.

They're simply doing the small things consistently.

Success isn't built in one day. It truly is one day at a time.

It's built through hundreds of tiny habits that don't seem like much on their own but, over time, completely transform a business.

If you've ever wondered why some groomers seem to have loyal clients, full appointment books, glowing reviews and a business they genuinely enjoy running, chances are these small daily habits are a big part of the reason.

Let's look at some of the habits that really make a difference.

1. They Start the Day with a Plan

Rather than arriving at the salon and hoping for the best, successful groomers know what their day looks like before it begins. They are proactive rather than reactive. They know that in order to be successful they need to have control over their day.

They know:

  • Which dogs are booked in

  • Any special requirements

  • What products they'll need

  • When they'll take breaks

  • Any phone calls or admin that need doing

Even spending ten minutes planning your day can reduce stress enormously.

When you feel organised, your clients notice too.

2. They Keep Their Salon Spotlessly Clean

Every groomer cleans.

But successful groomers clean constantly.

You might feel over-whelmed at the thought of this but it's just a matter of having good systems in place that means you are constantly staying on top of things through out the day.

Hair is swept up throughout the day.
Equipment is disinfected regularly.
Worktops stay tidy.
Fresh towels are always available.

Clients may not consciously notice every detail, but they definitely notice when a salon feels clean, fresh and professional.

It's one of the quickest ways to build trust.

3. They Reply to Messages Promptly

People love good communication.

Have certain times throughout the day where you answer any messages and return any calls. Make sure you have an automatic message system set up so that in between these times customers are acknolodged and are aware of your reply times.

For example:

"Thanks so much for your message. I'm grooming at the moment but I'll between 4.30pm and 5pm."

takes less than a minute but makes clients feel valued.

Good communication often wins clients over just as much as a great groom.

4. They Continue Learning

The best groomers never stop improving, and considering you are reading this it means you are on right track and have the right mindset when it comes to growing your business.

The most dedication and successful groomers understand the power of continuous learning.

They read articles, listen to podcasts, join webinars, watch demonstrations, and ask questions.

Whether it's grooming techniques, customer service, marketing or business skills, they're always learning something new.

Growth happens when you're willing to stay curious.

5. They Keep Client Notes

Successful groomers don't rely on memory.

I've said it before and I'll say it again your brain was not designed to remember every single thing that happens, everyday of our lives. We need to put systems in place.

Again check out The Glossy Pup Blueprint for more help with this.

Successful groomers keep detailed notes about every dog.

Things like:

  • Favourite treats

  • Nervous behaviours

  • Health conditions

  • Preferred haircut

  • Owner preferences

  • Products used

When a client returns months later and you remember that their Cockapoo prefers shorter ears or gets anxious around the dryer, they feel genuinely cared for.

It's those personal touches that create loyal customers.

6. They Ask for Reviews

Many brilliant groomers never ask.

Successful groomers do.

Not because they're pushy—but because they know happy clients are usually delighted to help.

Reviews build trust before a new client ever contacts you.

A simple message after the appointment is often all it takes.

If you don't want to ask people personally then add it your business cards, loyalty cards, after-care notes or Newsletter.

7. They Post Consistently on Social Media

Notice I said consistently—not constantly.

You don't need to post three times a day.

You simply need to stay visible.

Share:

  • Before and after photos

  • Grooming tips

  • Cute client moments

  • Seasonal advice

  • Behind-the-scenes snippets

People book businesses they remember.

Showing up regularly keeps your salon in people's minds.

My tip is to schedule all posys you can before-hand e.g. entertainment posts, information posts and anouncements. All the rest you can do as and when, like before and afters but have a quick system for that too.

8. They Stay Calm When Things Go Wrong

Dogs have accidents.

Appointments run late.

Equipment breaks.

Clients cancel.

Successful groomers don't avoid problems—they deal with them calmly.

They know every business faces challenges.

It's how you respond that builds your reputation.

Remaining professional under pressure helps clients feel confident they've chosen the right groomer.

Again, by having systems in place for as many of these types of things as you can is really going to take the pressure off.

9. They Value Every Client

Whether someone spends €40 or €100, every customer deserves the same warm welcome.

I think there is a saying that goes something like - Make everyone feel important and you will never go hungry.... However it goes the point is still the same. Make everyone feel special.

The might only spend a little this time but they may come back again and again.

Successful groomers remember names, Smile, Say thank you, Celebrate puppies on their first groom, Ask about older dogs and just generally take a real interest in their clients.

These little moments create relationships—not just transactions.

People return because of how you make them feel.

10. They Make Time to Work On Their Business

This is probably the biggest habit of all.

Many groomers spend all day working in their business.

The successful ones also spend time working on it.

That might mean:

  • Planning future marketing

  • Reviewing finances

  • Updating their website

  • Creating social media content

  • Learning something new

  • Setting goals

Even just one hour each week can completely change the direction of your business.

Small improvements made consistently lead to big results.

Success Isn't About Perfection

One of the biggest misconceptions about successful business owners is that they have everything figured out.

They don't.

They still have difficult days.

They still make mistakes.

They still doubt themselves from time to time.

The difference is that they keep showing up.

They keep improving.

They keep building one good habit at a time.

Remember, every thriving grooming business started exactly where you are now—with someone willing to take the next small step.

Final Thoughts

If reading this list feels overwhelming, don't try to change everything at once.

Pick just one habit.

Practise it until it becomes second nature.

Then choose another.

Over weeks, months and years, those small habits compound into something remarkable.

Your clients will notice.

Your confidence will grow.

And your business will become stronger because of the little things you chose to do consistently.

Because in business, just like dog grooming, it's often the smallest details that create the biggest transformation.
