When the sun comes out, most of us are dreaming of BBQs, beach days and ice cream. But if you're running a home-based dog grooming business, a heatwave brings a whole new set of challenges.

This year we have already had three heatwaves in Ireland.... and it's only the middle of July. This means we have to assume this heat isn't going away anytime soon - although never say never, this is Ireland afterall.

I know other countries have had even hotter weather than us too!

You see the problem is, Ireland, like some other countries that have been affected, is just not built for the hot weather. Most homes and businesses don't have air-conditioning. Infact we have them insulated to the rafters to keep out the cold! This means we are starting out at a disadvantage. We don't have systems or routines set up for hot weather. So we just suffer and survive.

Unfortunately when you are a business owner the hotter weather doesn't just affect you—it affects every dog that walks through your door too.

The good news? With a little planning and a few simple changes, you can hopefully keep your salon running smoothly while making sure every dog stays happy, safe and comfortable.

Here are my top tips.

1. Start Your Day Earlier

If possible, schedule your larger breeds, senior dogs and double-coated breeds first thing in the morning when temperatures are lower.

Not only will the dogs be more comfortable, but you'll have more energy too.

Try to avoid booking particularly nervous dogs during the hottest part of the afternoon if you can help it.

You need to prioiritize. You need to look at every client individually, their risk factors and if you even may need to postpone the appointment altogether.

2. Keep Your Grooming Room Cool

This might seem like and obvious one but a cool environment makes a huge difference.

You don't need an expensive salon setup.

Simple things like:

• Fans

• Good ventilation

• Air conditioning (if available)

• Closing blinds during the hottest part of the day

can help keep your workspace much more comfortable.

If possible it might even make more sense to set up outside, under shade - If there is a breeze of course and is cooler outside.

3. Always Have Fresh Water Available

Again sounds obvious, but it's easy to forget when you're busy.

Every dog should have access to fresh, clean drinking water before, during and after their groom.

It's one of the simplest ways to keep them comfortable.

4. Allow Extra Time

During a heatwave, everything takes a little longer.

Dogs may need extra comfort breaks.

They may become tired more quickly.

You might even need to slow down while drying coats if the dryer is creating additional heat. Towel dry as much as possible.

Rather than squeezing in extra appointments, give yourself a little breathing space.

Your stress levels (and the dogs) will thank you.

5. Watch for Signs of Overheating

Every groomer should know the warning signs.

Keep an eye out for:

• Excessive panting

• Bright red gums

• Drooling

• Weakness

• Lethargy

• Confusion

• Vomiting

If you think a dog may be overheating, stop grooming immediately, move them somewhere cool, offer water and contact their owner or a vet if necessary.

The dog's welfare always comes first.

6. Communicate with Your Clients

Don't be afraid to let customers know if you're adjusting your opening hours during particularly hot weather. As I always say communication is key to building a successful business!

Most owners will completely understand if you're putting their dog's welfare first.

In fact, it often builds even more trust because people will understand that you are not willing to risk their pet just for the money.

You could send a quick Facebook post or text saying:

"Due to the high temperatures this week, I'm moving some appointments to earlier in the day to make sure every dog stays comfortable and safe."

Professional communication reassures clients that you genuinely care.

7. Look After Yourself Too

It's easy to spend all day making sure everyone else is comfortable, But don't forget about yourself.

Drink plenty of water, Take short breaks, Wear lightweight clothing and Keep healthy snacks nearby.

Dog grooming his hard, manual work and we know the heat makes everything even harder.

You can't give your best to your clients if you're exhausted or overheating yourself.

8. Close or reschedule appointments if you need to

This one might seem like strange advice but honestly sometimes you just need to take the hit.

There is only so much we can do sometimes and if the temperature is in the thirties and your room is only going to get hotter with hairdryers and everything else, you need to make the executive decision to call time out.

It will only be for a short period, probably a couple of days at most but it could save both you and those dogs.

Success Isn't About Working Harder

Many business owners think success means fitting in one more appointment.

But real success comes from providing excellent care, staying professional and making smart decisions when circumstances change.

Your clients won't remember that you groomed one extra dog.

They'll remember how well you looked after the one they trusted you with.

Building a successful home-based dog grooming business is all about creating trust, delivering excellent service and adapting when needed.

Sometimes slowing down is actually one of the smartest business decisions you can make.

Heatwaves can be hard and disruptive but thankfully they don't last long, and remember it's not just you, everyone is just trying to survive, so they will understand.
