Word-of-Mouth Magic: How to Get Clients Talking About Your Home Salon

March 31, 20263 min read

There’s something incredibly special about hearing a new client say,
“My friend recommended you.”

It instantly builds trust. It shortens the “getting to know you” phase. And best of all? It brings in dream clients who already believe in and value your work.

Word-of-mouth is one of the most powerful (and free!) ways to grow your home-based dog grooming business. But here’s the truth…

It doesn’t just happen by accident, It happens by design.

Let’s talk about how to create that kind of magic in your salon

1. Create an Experience Worth Talking About

People don’t just recommend a service…
They recommend how it made them feel.

Think beyond the groom itself. Ask yourself:

  • Did the client feel welcomed when they arrived?

  • Was their dog treated like a VIP?

  • Did they leave feeling proud, relieved, and happy?

Little touches go a long way:

  • A warm greeting (use their dog’s name!)

  • A calm, clean, beautiful space

  • Make them feel special with their dog's name on a welcome board and little welcome pack or go home bag

  • A cute bandana or spritz at the end

✨ These are the moments people share with friends.

2. Give Them Something to Show Off

Want clients to talk about you?
Make it easy (and irresistible) for them to do so.

After each groom:

  • Take a gorgeous photo or video of their dog (try and get before ones as well for social media

  • Send it to them or post (with permission)

  • Make it share-worthy

You’re not just grooming dogs — you’re creating “look at my dog!!!” moments (everyone loves to show off their dogs!)

And when they share that photo?
You get seen by their entire network.

3. Ask (Yes, Really!)

Most happy clients are more than willing to recommend you…
They just need a little nudge.

You can say something simple like:

  • “I’m always taking on lovely clients like you — feel free to pass my name on!”

  • “Referrals mean the world to my little business ”

It's also great to do this with comlimentary businesses such as vets, dog walkers, doggie day care, local rescues, breeders and so on... You can even give them some business cards to pass on. Then you can return the favour whenever someones ask you about their service.

This doesn’t have to feel pushy.
It’s an invitation, not a demand.

4. Reward Referrals (Without Cheapening Your Brand)

You don’t need heavy discounts or complicated schemes. I did this in the beginning when I opened up Posh Pups.

Keep it simple and aligned with your brand:

  • £5 off their next groom (This is the option I chose)

  • A free add-on (like a teeth clean or spa treatment)

  • A small thank-you gift

This turns referrals into something fun and appreciated — not transactional.

5. Be Consistently Excellent

This is the real secret.

Word-of-mouth doesn’t come from one amazing experience…
It comes from delivering a reliably brilliant experience every single time.

This doesn't mean giving the most perfect groom but doing your best each time to deliver a service that makes your clients feel joyful every time they leave your salon.

When clients know they can trust you:

  • They stop “shopping around”

  • They become loyal

  • They naturally recommend you without even thinking about it

Consistency builds confidence.
Confidence creates conversations.

6. Build Relationships, Not Just Appointments

Your clients aren’t just bookings in your diary.
They’re people who love their dogs deeply.

Take a moment to:

  • Remember little details

  • Ask how their dog has been

  • Celebrate milestones (like birthdays or first grooms!)

When people feel seen and valued, they talk about you differently.

Not just:
“She’s a good groomer”

But:
“You HAVE to go to her — she’s amazing.”

People care that you care!

Final Thoughts: This Is Where the Magic Happens

You don’t need a huge following.
You don’t need to be everywhere online.

You just need:
💛 Happy clients
💛 Thoughtful touches
💛 A memorable experience

Because when you create something special…

People will talk.

And that’s how your home salon grows —
not through noise, but through trust
